Josée Gravel is a partner at Hansell LLP. Josée joined Hansell after having served for twelve years as General Counsel of GE Capital Canada and Export and Development Canada successively.
Earlier in her career, Josée was a partner at Stikeman Elliott where she practised corporate and commercial law for fourteen years as part of the banking and real estate group in the Montreal office. During her years in private practice, Josée represented clients operating mostly in the financial, real estate, and aeronautics sectors, in the context of local and cross-border acquisitions and financing transactions.
Josée then joined GE Capital, a member of the General Electric group of companies, as Senior Vice-President and General Counsel for its Canadian operations. During her seven years at GE, Josée built and led the national in-house legal team and sat on the organization’s Canadian Executive Committee and North American Legal Advisory Board. While at GE, Josée acquired valuable leadership and management experience, particularly during the 2007-2009 financial crisis during which she served as lead advisor to GE Capital Americas for Canadian commercial, regulatory and compliance issues , and as director on the board of GE Capital’s Canadian subsidiaries. Josée received formal recognition from GE for her performance as a leader in growth and global integration and her courage and tenacity in concern resolution.
More recently, Josée acquired experience in the public sector in her role as Vice-President and General Counsel of Export Development Canada (EDC), a federal Crown Corporation. During her four years at EDC, Josée led the in-house legal team through cultural transformation and advised the Corporation on the build-out of the risk management and compliance frameworks, as well as on complex international transactions. Josée was a member of EDC’s risk management, investment and project finance committees. She was also a regular contributor, in collaboration with the Compliance and Corporate Social Responsibility leaders, on advising executives and directors on matters of legal and reputational risk.
Josée obtained her B.C.L. and M.B.A. degrees at McGill University. In 2011, she completed the Directors Education Program offered by the Institute of Corporate Directors, in association with the Rotman School of Business and McGill University.
